At The Creek’s Edge we raise our flock totally on pasture and hay that is produced on our farm or neighboring farms. Our rotationally grazed irrigated pastures allow the flock a consistent supply of lush grasses and legumes throughout the season The lambs are not given any antibiotics, hormones or animal by-products.
Icelandic lamb is light tasting, tender, fine grained and lean. Our lambs are harvested at seven to twelve months of age and are processed at a USDA inspected facility. Lamb is available whole or by the individual cut at The Plantsmyth, 2613 E. Hwy. 44, Rapid City, SD 57703, 605-348-3387. Health Benefits of Grass Fed Meats
Grass finished meats have numerous health benefits. Grass fed meats are lower in saturated fat than grain fed meats due to the high protein and fiber content of the grass the animals eat. If the meat is very lean it can have as little as one third the fat content as a similar cut of grain fed meat.
Grass fed meats are also higher in the amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids. These are the good fats or heart healthy fats also found in salmon, flaxseed and walnuts. Meat from grass fed animals has two to four times more Omega-3’s. Omega-3’s play an important role in every cell and system in your body.
Grass fed meats also have higher levels of Conjugated Linoleic Acid, another fatty acid or good fat, and vitamin A and E. Meats from grass fed animals can have three to five times more CLA than those from grain fed animals.
